The World's Oldest Living Yoga Teacher Is 98 Years Old And Still Teaching

There are probably hundreds, if not thousands of yoga studios in New York City, but only in one will you find 98-year-old Tao Porchon-Lynch, the Guinness World Record holder of the oldest yoga instructor in the world. This remarkable woman is still teaching classes five times a week.

Not only does Tao live and breathe yoga, but she has lived an incredible life, always finding ways to weave the practice into her routine since she first tried it in 1926.

Growing up in India and raised by her uncle, Tao was surrounded by incredible people. Her uncle's friends included Mahatma Gandhi and the poet and spiritual leader Sri Aurobino.

Her uncle was even a student of the man credited with bringing yoga to the West in 1893, Swami Vivekananda. No wonder she was drawn to it.

Tao performed in London cabarets during the Blitz and then went to Hollywood, where she was signed with MGM. She appeared in movies such as Show Boat and The Last Time I Saw Paris, which also starred Elizabeth Taylor.

Between takes, Tao would often hold amateur yoga classes with her fellow actresses.

Though she had been teaching yoga since her Hollywood days, Tao only began to take it more seriously later on. She's credited with founding the Yoga Teacher's Association in 1979 and the Westchester Institute of Yoga in 1982.

It's estimated that she's since certified over 1,600 yoga instructors.

Tao is also an accomplished dancer, having won over 700 First Place Awards since she started ballroom dancing in 2005. Her partners are often more than 70 years younger than her.

She was always interested in dancing, becoming famous while performing in London cabarets after escaping Nazi-occupied France. But it wasn't until she was 87 years old that she started to seriously pursue it.

If I could do half as much as Tao before I'm 50, I'd be happy. You should SHAREher amazing story with everyone you know!
